5.3 Crossing the Rubicon Part 1 – Recon mission

Chuck rode the turbolift in silence, thinking about possible avenues the mission could take. Chuck was a little nervous about reporting to his new Captain, but at least he had a mission to talk about and ideas to float. He was glad for the immediacy of the mission, so he could skip the small talk. The turbolift stopped at the bridge, Chuck stepped onto the bridge and walked over to the Captain,
"I am here with the starfighter readiness report, Captain."
Amara nodded, "Have a seat Lieutenant."
Chuck sat down, then stated, "All the fighters will be ready to launch within five minutes of the order to launch."
"Good you'll be needed. Also be aware you may run into Trafalgar's fighters so approach carefully."
Sensing that he was about to be dismissed, Chuck continued, "I would like to launch a recon mission to the Paulson Nebula before the Victorious enters."
Amara didn't like what he was proposing but it was her duty to get further information, "What's your plan?"
Chuck loosened up, "My idea is to take my squadron of Valkyries into the nebula to assess the situation."
"I'll be honest I don't like you going in without our backup since we don't know the situation. If things are still hot then Victorious is capable of handling it better than you can alone."
"I know it sounds risky, but if I remember correctly, the USS New Orleans was lost in this nebula, and now the USS Trafalgar is sending out a distress call from the nebula, so there is something in the nebula capable of disabling two Starfleet vessels. A squadron of Valkyries stands a better chance of getting in and out of the nebula undetected than the Victorious and even if we are detected and a hostile force attacks us, then at least one of my fighters will be able to get out and give you a report on what to expect."
"If you wait that long it could be too late," Amara replied. "I"ll agree to the Recon mission but be careful. We don't know what happened but we have to find out one way or another." While it wasn't their best option they didn't have any other choice. Motioning for Edwards to continue.
"Now for the specifics, ShadowHawk Squadron will divide into three flights of two each when we enter the nebula, when we encounter a hostile force, the nearest two flights will engage the hostile force while the third leaves the nebula to alert the Victorious. The other three squadrons will be deployed at rally points Alpha, Beta and Gamma," Chuck extended a PADD to Amara with the rally points designated around the outside of the nebula. "After the third flight has had time to clear the nebula, the other two fighters will fall back to the nearest rally point. If the hostile force is in pursuit, then the other squadrons will converge on the hostile force and engage."
Amara accepted the PADD and reviewed it carefully. "Nice work Lieutenant. Let's hope we don't have any hostiles still lurking out there but we can't just ignore the fact they have been here either. Stay sharp out there."
"Aye Aye, Captain. We'll launch in a few." Blast left the Bridge and headed back to the turbolift.
