5.3 Crossing the Rubicon Part 1 – Taking a break
by Lieutenant Charles Edwards & Lieutenant JG Clara Princeton
Lt Charles Edwards had just finished his post flight report and was hungry. He boarded the turbolift and said "Deck 2" to the computer. He then walked off the turbolift and into the mess hall. Chuck filled his tray and started to walk over to where the other pilots were sitting off to one side, but he saw a science officer sitting by herself. and walked over to the science officer,
"Is this seat taken?" He asked.
Clara looked up at the officer and shook her head, "No. Feel free to join me..." Clara looked for the PADD that had the crew information on it, but she could not find it. Clara sighed, "Sorry I'm new to the Chief Science Officer position and I still don't know the crew." Clara gave a small laugh and went on, "My name is Clara Princeton, Lieutenant JG."
Chuck sat down. "I'm Lieutenant Charles Edwards, but everybody just calls me Chuck. I'm the squadron leader for the ShadowHawks. My family is mostly engineers and scientists. That gene mostly missed me. So what drew you into science?"
"I love it. It has so much excitement in it and it drew me in." Clara smiled and looked at Charles, "And you? What drew you to what you do?"
"At first it was all the holovids growing up, not starfighters, but fighters flying off Guadalcanal and Midway in the Second World War on Earth. There was a nobility to it. Once I got into the cockpit off a starfighter, it was the freedom. It's kind of like flying a starship except without all the people interrupting you constantly, knowing that you're out there on your own. Does that make sense?"
"Somewhat. I got that you love flying." Clara gave an embarrassed smile at the man across from her.
"I tend to come across like that sometimes," Chuck replied. "I'm lucky to have a job that I really love to do. What do you love to do?"
"Science. Anything to do with science. I love experimenting with new things that could help the ship and crew."
Chuck nodded his head. Just as he was about to say something, his commbadge went off,
=/="LT Edwards, report to the flight deck."=/=
Chuck tapped his commbadge, =/="On my way."=/=
Chuck stood up, "It was nice to meet you."
Clara shook her head. An officer's work was never done. Not even when you were off duty you were on duty. "It was nice meeting you too, Chuck."
Chuck walked out of the Mess Hall and got on the nearest turbolift and headed for the flight deck.
