5.3 Crossing the Rubicon Part 1 – Bouncing along the bumpy road
by Lieutenant Commander Maximilian Anselm
Max's teeth were beginning to rattle inside his head as the Victorious bounced her way through the Paulson Nebula. It was beginning to grate on everyone's nerves on the bridge and no doubt everywhere else on the ship. Just as you got your feet back under you the ship would penetrate another gas cloud and bursting it.
Sensors were still trying pinpoint the antimatter explosions occurring in the nebula and so far the Chief of Science had not been able to fine tune the sensors enough to smooth out the bumps.
As the Victorious rocked hard hard under an explosion, Max grabbed hold of his terminal to steady himself and continue his scan.
"Damn it Princeton figure this out, this is getting ridiculous." Max mumbled to himself. "And find those damn starships."
While they waited Max had heard from the marines and Acel'a. They were ready to go and waiting. Something the marines were probably used to but didn't like. Hurry up and wait.
They really had no idea what they were facing out there. The marines were ready but they had no idea for what. Neither did his security teams. He was not exactly pleased with that. With the potential for a space battle, Max was going to be faced with staying aboard the Victorious, leaving Comeroff and Acel'a to lead the raiding and security parties if they were needed. As a not too distant past Assistant Chief of Security, it was going to be hard for Max to stay aboard ship. He was normally loaded up down below waiting for the call to go. His duty now was to the ship first and that meant staying. He'd been in this job now only a few months but it was still very hard not to send Acel'a back up to the bridge and let him lead the teams.
But he'd also learned from his previous mentor aboard the Passchendaele that Acel'a needed to lead the teams. She needed the experience if she was ever to become a future Chief. So was the way of Starfleet and the military officers for centuries before him. While you knew you could do the job, you also needed your subordinates to be able to do it as well. Your job as the department head was to train the future because someday you would be gone and they would replace you.
As Max focused back on the bumpy ride the Victorious bucked again and he redirected power to recharge the damaged quadrant.
It was going to be so nice when they finally got through this area of the nebula or even better out into clear space.
